Council Provides Support for Nicaraguan Woman to Attend Mennonite World Conference
The Council for Women in Ministry was pleased to be able to provide financial assistance for Fada Luz Perez from the Brethren in Christ Church in Nicaragua to attend a gathering of Latin American and African women theologians in Paraguay in July 2009 as part of the Mennonite World Conference Assembly.
On Saturday, July 18, at Mennonite World Conference in Paraguay, the Latin American women theologians hosted a special tea for the African women theologians and women from around the world who have provided support for travel and/or scholarships. Around 80 women and a few men participated. Sandra Campos from Costa Rica created special hand-made cards to share their thanks with contributing women’s groups. The card read: "We want to express our gratitude; first, for the support that you have given us by believing in this project of reflection; secondly, for the efforts you have made to increase our funds with your financial gifts; and thirdly, for your prayers. We hope to see you represented and enjoy with us the miracle the Lord is allowing us to realize. May the prayers that you weave, be like nets that extend to reach many other women." Fada Luz Perez also reflected on the experience: "I have felt very grateful to the people of Paraguay. They are kind of heart. In truth I feel at home. The workshops and programs…challenge me to do better in my work in my family, church and community."
The Latin American women prepared a declaration based on the theme of their gathering, "The Liberating Message of Jesus for Women Today".
