Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America, is bordered in the north by Honduras, in the east by the Caribbean Sea and in the west by the Pacific Ocean. The coastal plain is interrupted by some 40 volcanoes and dominated by Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America. The population of Nicaragua is very young; approximately 40% are under 18 years of age. The country has strong folklore, music and religious traditions and has historically been an important source of poetry.
