Mozambique was first inhabited by native farmers and ironworkers but was later controlled by Arab and Portuguese traders. Formerly a tourist destination for the Portuguese and South Africans with 1500 miles of beaches adjacent to the beautiful Indian Ocean, today it is remembered for one of the longest and bloodiest civil wars in Africa. It is estimated that over 12% of the population suffers from HIV/AIDS.
