Tribute to John Bundy
1934 - 2005
John L. Bundy went to be with the Lord on November 10, 2005 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. John was 71 years old.
John was born in Pontiac, Michigan and from the age of six attended Leonard BIC Church with his family. While working at God’s Love Mission in Detroit, Michigan, John felt God’s call to ministry. He and his wife Mary (Simmons) moved from Michigan to Mechanicsburg, PA, where they began attending the Mechanicsburg BIC Church.
John’s first pastoral assignment was with the Fox Hollow BIC (now Montoursville BIC), a congregation he served for twelve years. A bi-vocational pastor, John worked in a local bank while providing pastoral leadership for the congregation. Following two years of service with Pleasant View BIC in Red Lion, PA, John took a leave from the pastorate to be a borough manager in West York, PA. Yet the pastorate was his home and John plunged into full-time ministry in pastorates at Manheim BIC, Cedar Heights BIC, and finally Air Hill BIC, after which he retired. In his final years, John was fully engaged in the Manor BIC congregation, and at one point gave leadership to their senior adult ministry.
John had a deep love for Christ and the Church, and this was reflected in the way he sacrificially served in church life. There was a deep sense of commitment to his call to ministry and a spirit of availability. Terms that have been used to describe John include, “gentle, warm, convictional, available, accurate, and churchman.” John gave significantly in service to the Brethren In Christ Church. In addition to his faithful pastoral ministry, John served for over eleven years as a regional conference treasurer in the Allegheny and Susquehanna conferences, worked for thirteen years as a trustee on the BIC ministers' pension fund, served for six years on the Allegheny Conference Extension Loan Fund as a trustee of the Christian Retreat Center, and provided eighteen years of faithful service in the information center at Roxbury Holiness Camp. John made available his gifts to Christ and the Church.
Though his life on earth has now been completed, the fruit of his life and ministry will and do remain. On November 10, 2005, John L. Bundy received the ultimate commendation from his Lord, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Come and share your master’s happiness.” We celebrate John’s life and his ministry.
