A new chair in the GC boardroom
It’s not the way Sandy Musser would have wanted to move into the position of the General Conference Board (GCB) chair. However, when Mark Garis was forced to step down from the chairmanship because of illness, Sandy’s 10-year history as a member-at-large on the board and her longtime commitment to the Brethren in Christ Church made her the obvious choice to fill the role. (For the latest on Mark’s progress, go to markgaris.blogspot.com.)
Those who’ve worked and/or worshipped with Sandy describe her as insightful and understanding of group and church dynamics, a people person who is also thorough, responsible and dependable. To this, Mark adds: “Sandy demonstrates a love for the Lord and the BIC Church and will make an excellent chair and church leader.”
In return, Sandy expresses appreciation for her predecessor, stating, “Mark was chair when I came on the board 10 years ago and he has led with excellence. He has been a true model of servant leadership.”
Sandy and her husband Jim were active members of Gateway Community Church Chino, CA for over 30 years, where Sandy served as director of music ministries and in other staff roles. Currently, the Mussers are part of the BIC church plant, GracePoint Church, in South Ontario, CA, where their daughter Nicole and son-in-law Steve Airth serve as the pastoral couple.
When asked what she feels she brings to her service on the GCB, Sandy replied that she comes “from a long heritage of BIC people” and so “knows and appreciates the history and distinctives of the Brethren in Christ.” She says she is “sensitive to change” but is also excited to “see the church utilize all of the technology that exists to let the whole world know about Jesus.” She’ll have her first opportunity to put all this to the test when the GCB meets later this month (September 22–23) in Oakville, Ontario.
And as for what comes after she chairs her first meeting, Sandy states: “We are just beginning to touch some of the ethnic groups in the U.S. and Canada, so I look forward to being part of moving the BIC Church ahead in that direction.”
Please welcome Sandy to her leadership role, and remember her in prayer as she serves the board and the BIC in this demanding and voluntary position. Pray also for new board members Wanda Heise, Becky Mashinter, William Strausbaugh, and Darrell Winger (who moves from General Secretary to the board) as they prepare for their first meeting.
