Governance on the road
Following the pattern of the past few years, the General Conference Board (GCB) will once again take their governance work on the road, this time to Oakville, Ontario, September 22 and 23. The rationale behind the trans-continental board travel is to provide church leaders with an up-close and personal look at the wide-ranging contours of the BIC landscape. Or as more than one member of the GCB has observed, it’s hard to grasp the full scope of the wider church when looking out the window in Grantham, Pa.
During their first day together, the GCB will focus on its own development, guided by Rebekah Burch Basinger, director of congregational relations and a consultant in board development for faith-based organizations. The overarching question that Basinger will present to the board is: What does it mean to be a healthy board, setting the context for 325 healthy congregations by 2010?
Other business on the GCB agenda includes creating a task force for leadership development and succession, reviewing 2006 financials, and a continuing discussion about health insurance and the denomination’s pension plan for ministers. Members of the GCB will also have the first look at several new diagnostic tools in support of the denomination’s healthy church initiative.
