November 2006

The monthly financial report is receiving a bit more attention as we enter the last few weeks of the giving year. Gene Blessing, chief financial officer for the General Church, reports that congregational support is lagging a bit, on the U.S. side, behind last year at this time. That said, the $2,161,717 (USD) received through September is strong evidence of the faithfulness of God’s people in meeting commitments, and we look forward to a great ending to the current giving year. Your church’s part in making that happen is much appreciated!

Planning for your church's 2007 budget

For the majority of BIC congregations, it’s time to make decisions about 2007 ministry spending plans. So we have prepared a resource piece to help U.S. congregations as they consider their level of participation in Cooperative Ministries in the year ahead. The CM flyer (for General Church) comes as a PDF that can be downloaded and copied. Or if you prefer, contact the General Church Offices at (717)-697-2634, ext. 5406 and we will be happy to send up to 20 of the flyers your way. Download the CM flyer (PDF)

For Canada contact the Bishop's office at (905) 339-2335.

Encouraging a new view of small churches

Although smaller churches dominate the religious landscape in Canada and the U.S., congregations with attendance figures of less than 75 tend to get a bad rap in church growth circles. Lewis Parks, director of the small church initiative at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., has made it his mission to do something about the situation, and he shared his ideas with Leadership Council in mid-October. Ministry Enrichment Retreat slated for Pittsburgh

As a denomination, we’ve identified “encouraging leaders” as one of the top three priorities. On July 9–12, 2007, we’ll translate that priority into program with our once-every-four-years church-wide Ministry Enrichment Retreat for BIC pastors and spouses. Read more>>

We have a date for GC 2008

U.S. residents, get your passports in order; General Conference 2008 will be a border-crossing event in more ways than one. Holding onto the hearts of our youth

An article in the October 6 issue of The New York Times carried the dire warning that if current trends continue, only 4 percent of teenagers will be “Bible-believing Christians” as adults. Even if this is an overly pessimistic estimate, as Christian leaders have been quick to claim, healthy churches know the importance of being intentional about holding onto the hearts of youth.
