New CFO Brings Experience and Heart to His Work

Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each week, the staff at the General Church Offices in Grantham, PA is one stronger in the person of Eugene (Gene) Blessing, the denomination’s new (and very part-time) chief financial officer. Recently retired following a thirty-year career with PQ Corporation, a multi-national producer of environmentally friendly alternative chemicals, Gene brings a wealth of experience to the CFO position. Just as important, he brings a heart for the mission and ministry of the Brethren in Christ Church, as evidenced by his decision to donate his services to the finance office.

Gene’s first involvement with the BIC Church came in the 1980s when he and his wife, Mary, were involved in a church plant that Warren and Connie Hoffman launched in Oklahoma City, OK. During the years since, the Blessings have lived all over the world, including a stint in Oakville, Ontario before Upper Oaks BIC was started, and four years in the Netherlands. The couple was delighted when their latest move brought them back into contact with the BIC and today Gene and Mary are active in the Marsh Creek BIC Church, in Exton, PA.

During his first months on the job, Gene has worked with Controller Gerry Richwine and Dianna Weaver, accounting assistant, to reduce the complexity of the denomination’s financial reporting. “ Our initial goal is to present the financial position of the denomination in an easy to understand format so that Leadership Council, the General Church Board, and the whole church have a better sense of how we are doing financially,” Gene explains. He adds that he “will be working with a lot of people in the various conferences and with the general church leaders and the missions office, all of who are ‘customers’ of the finance department.”

Gene’s work with the General Church connects him weekly with another passion of his heart – his grandchildren, Eli (3) and Emma (1). When he’s in Grantham, Gene stays with his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren in nearby Carlisle, PA.
