BIC Connection Visible as Messiah College Inaugurates New President
Messiah College celebrated the inauguration of its eighth president, Dr. Kim S. Phipps on Friday, October 14.
Founded by the Brethren in Christ in 1909 as a missionary training school, Messiah College still enjoys a covenantal relationship with the church and maintains active support. Both our Moderator and General Secretary serve on the Board of Trustees and other board members are also members of the Brethren in Christ Church, including Eunice Steinbrecher, who attends Pleasant Hill BIC and serves as chair of the board.

During the inauguration, Warren presented President Phipps with a custom-bound commemorative volume containing two books, Reflections on a Heritage and Focusing Our Faith.
Reflections on a Heritage is a collection of essays written between 1959 and 1998 that helped to coalesce and define our BIC identity. Focusing our Faith describes the BIC core values agreed upon in a church-wide consultation in 1999. When presenting this special volume to President Phipps, Warren said, “these two books…can equip you - and us – with a clear sense of identity and purpose as we strive to live out our shared convictions with courage and excellence.”
Before accepting the position of president, Dr. Phipps served as both academic dean and provost of Messiah College. Before coming to Messiah, she served in a variety of leadership roles at Malone College in Canton, OH. (For more information link to http://www.messiah.edu/inauguration) Dr. Phipps attends Grantham BIC Church, where she teaches a Sunday school class for young adults.
As an inaugural theme, President Phipps selected, "Created and Called for Community." This theme corresponds with the BIC core value of “Belonging to the Community of Faith” which reads, “We value integrity in relationships and mutual accountability in an atmosphere of grace, love, and acceptance.”
Join us in praying for God’s grace and guidance for President Kim Phipps and Messiah College.

President Phipps, on behalf of the Brethren in Christ Church, I am pleased to present you with a book that describes our shared understanding of the Christian faith.
Over the years, spokespersons have described Brethren in Christ life and thought in ways which have become “classic” statements of identity for both church and college. These essays have been gathered into a book, Reflections on a Heritage.
No matter how good, formative values must be restated in every generation through words and phrases, images and symbols that accurately depict who we are – and appeal to a new generation. This need prompted another book, Focusing our Faith.
These two books, bound together in one commemorative volume, can equip you - and us - with a clear sense of identity and purpose as we strive to live out our shared convictions with courage and excellence.
