Igniting the hearts of young people
It’s Friday night at Grantham BIC Church, and there’s a room full of young people praying in small groups. Hosted by Brethren in Christ World Missions ( BICWM) and attracting a number of students from nearby Messiah College, this vibrant monthly gathering of 40 - 60 people is aptly named “Ignite.” The purpose of the group—which targets young adults while involving individuals of all ages—is to “stir a passion for God’s heart” among those who attend, inspiring renewal and fervor for the Lord.

“[Ignite] happens right at the point when I’m really in need of spiritual refreshment,” explains Lisa Coss, a senior at Messiah College who plans to participate in next year’s STEP program with BICWM. “Right when I’m asking, ‘am I sure this is what I want to do?’ I come to Ignite and feel encouraged.”
From missionary stories to pictures and music videos, Ignite attendees are offered an in-depth view of events, cultures, and mission fields across the world. Service opportunities are also announced, and throughout the past few years, many attendees have participated in short-term mission trips to London, New York City, and Montreal. To complement the fresh perspectives of recent travelers, Ignite provides an opportunity to hear from missionaries in the field—with a direct phone call to Malawi, for example—as well as those who are on furlough or in retirement.
From its inception, Ignite has been instrumental in helping young people discern where and how God will use their unique gifts and skills. And in the last several years, Ignite has had the privilege to send out several long-term missionaries from among its ranks, the majority of whom are now serving with BICWM. It is the prayer of the group’s leadership that, as more people discover this gathering of individuals committed to serving God to the ends of the earth, this generation will be fueled by the flame of Christ within them.
