Multi-talented bishop puts a new spin on fundraising

As a fundraiser for evangelism and church planting training in his conference, Bishop John Zuck of the Great Lakes Conference was inspired to create a remarkable plaque, which represents several of the conference’s unique qualities. The finished product was a woodcutting ¾ of an inch thick and 16 inches in diameter, made of seven different types of wood which are native to the Great Lakes Conference. Each existing church was marked on the “map” of the conference, reminding viewers of the beauty and challenge of serving a widespread group of churches. [see enlarged image]

A picture of the cutting was advertised in each Great Lakes church and people were invited to be present at the annual meeting on March 18 to place a bid in person, or mail in a bid to be opened at the auction. In the end, one of the mailed-in bids won with a bid for $1,000. But the fun wasn’t over yet, as the donor had included a note saying that if the bid was the highest and won, the donor wished to donate the plaque (and the money) back to the conference and continue the bidding. Quickly, a bid for $1,001 was received and one blessed Great Lakes attendee went home with the exquisite cutting, making the final total for the fundraiser $2,001.

Get your bids ready, Bishop John already has an idea for next year . . .
