Testifying to the power of tithing
For the past few years, the Port Colborne (ON) BIC Church has had a tough time meeting the annual budget set by the congregation. A major building program had resulted in considerable debt (around $360,000) and that was cutting into our giving to Cooperative Ministries.
At the January 2006 Congregational Council it was decided that we would "tithe" (10 percent) all our offerings to Cooperative Ministries at the end of each month. The thought behind this was simply that if we ask our people to tithe to the church then we must first set the example. Yes, this decision had a number of individuals quite skeptical about the possibilities.
As the year moved on, we did exactly what we had promised—tithed the total amount of our monthly offerings to Cooperative Ministries. (Note: in 2005 we gave a whopping $9,600 which was less than 5 percent of our giving going to Cooperative Ministries.) Praise the Lord, in 2006 along with paying down our debt considerably (in excess of $60,000), we gave more than $18,000 (which was our tithe) to Cooperative Ministries. In addition, we met our budget for the first time in several years.
God has directly blessed our tithe as we all preach that God will bless those who tithe. This is a wonderful praise to God.
