New in 2007: BIC-specific church health resources

Within a few days, pastors of all BIC churches in North America will receive an introductory packet of church health resources. The first, a Vital Signs Continuum, helps guide a congregation in a big picture overview of its ministry. The continuum is designed to encourage conversation about where a congregation is healthiest and also where there’s room for growth. The second resource is a Vital Signs Checklist that highlights commonly agreed upon characteristics of healthy churches.

Both instruments can be found in the church health section of the denomination’s website. The tools will also be distributed at the upcoming regional conferences for greater visibility across the whole of the church.

Commenting on the church health initiative, Bishop Brian Bell, Leadership Council’s point person on this vision priority, notes that “congregational health doesn’t just happen. It takes intentionality, prayer, faithful planning, and a commitment to rigorous evaluation. That’s why Leadership Council is strongly encouraging every BIC church in Canada and the U.S. to use at least one of the vital signs instruments during the coming three years. And when churches use either the continuum or the checklist, we ask that the leadership team provide their bishop with a copy of the results of the use of these tools. This will facilitate tracking progress toward the 2010 goal of 325 healthy congregations in partnership to impact the world for Jesus Christ.”
