June-July 2007
Although not much else slows down for the General Church leadership team during the summer months, we do cut back on the Momentum schedule with a combined issue for June and July. But that doesn't mean we stop communicating over the summer. The communication team posts content to the denomination's website almost daily, so we encourage you to check in often for the latest news and program updates from across the North American Brethren in Christ Church. A wealth of information is just a click away, 24/7, all year round.
Honoring a long time leader
A recent issue of the Atlantic Conference newsletter highlighted Bishop John Byers upon his latest transition in ministry, this time from associate bishop of the Southeast Conference to Pastor of Congregational Ministries at Messiah Village BIC Church. The newsletter used the words "servant," "team player," and "administratively savvy" to describe John, to which we add the words "adaptive," "dependable," and "gift to the BIC Church." Read more>>
Growing on our Hispanic edge
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 35 million people of Hispanic origin in the United States today, and the numbers continue to climb annually. The Brethren in Christ Church has benefited from the influx of new immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries-so much so, in fact, that currently, one in every five persons attending a BIC church is of Hispanic origin. To meet one of our Hispanic congregations, Iglesia El Buen, Pastor in Springfield, Ohio, read more>>
It's worth seeking more
You may already have received the summer issue of our magazine in the mail, and if not, it should be arriving within a day or two. In addition to the print version of the magazine, there's more good content that's worth seeking out on the website, including a fun story titled "When Old Men Sing." Read more >>
Continued progress toward a new Brotherhood Health Plan
The recent round of regional conference annual meetings provided opportunity for a church-wide discussion about reintroducing a BIC Brotherhood Health Plan. And although the conversations were a bit short on specifics, there was widespread agreement that this is an idea well worth pursuing. More>>
Counting down to General Conference 2008
Although General Conference 2008 is still a year away, it's not too early to make plans to join us in Toronto, Ontario, June 27 to 30. (For example, if you don't have a passport, it would be a good idea to apply now. Beginning January 2008, there's no crossing the Canada/U.S. border without one.) The planning team did its best to find a meeting hotel in downtown Toronto, but in the end, the best option-price-wise and for the meeting space we need was deemed to be the Sheraton Parkway in Richmond Hills, just north of the city.
The theme for the 2008 conference is world missions, and we can look forward to inspirational presentations about the impact of the Brethren in Christ churches worldwide.
Celebrating God's blessing on Messiah College
An opinion piece touting the accomplishments of Messiah College ran in the May 6 issue of the Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News. Knowing that the majority of Momentum readers do not receive this newspaper, we are including the article here for your information. The college is a continuing testimony to God's goodness in our midst. Read more>>
Generous today, but what about tomorrow?
Based on responses to the 2006 Church Member Profile, a research study that tracks beliefs and practices of persons attending Brethren in Christ, Church of the Brethren, and Mennonite churches, we can feel confident in the generosity of our people. Almost 70 percent of BIC respondents in the CMP survey say they give at least a tithe of their household income to their church and other charitable causes. And 85 percent say that living a simple lifestyle is important or fairly important to their Christian witness. But a Mennonite Mutual Aid study warns that less generous times may be ahead for Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches. Read more>>
