Intercessors Respond to Call for 24/7 Prayer

The BIC experienced a spiritual “power surge” as 80 intercessors mobilized for round-the-clock prayer during the Week of Prayer and Fasting, January 1–8. At least three congregations—Grantham (PA) BIC Church, The Net in Bedford, PA, and Mount Rock BIC Church in Shippensburg, PA—encouraged members to sign up for hourly intervals in order to cover each day with continual prayer. Other intercessors went to the denomination’s website to claim a spot on the 24/7 prayer schedule.

Although not every hour of the week was spoken for, 75 percent of the designated time span was covered by the prayers of at least one person. In total, this year’s band of dedicated intercessors prayed for 351 hours, or the equivalent of two full weeks of continuous prayer.

Psalm 121 tells us God watches over us continually and does not slumber. Leviticus tells us that the fire on the altar “must not go out.” The flame was a symbol of praise, worship, intercession, and reconciliation offered by the priests to God. In Isaiah, God talks about posting watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem who will, “never be silent day or night.” The book of Revelation describes heaven as a place where there is unceasing praise, worship, and intercession.

Initially 24/7 prayer by BIC churches was limited to the annual week of prayer and fasting. More recently, individuals have been encouraged to pray 24/7 year-round, with a schedule for ongoing 24/7 prayer posted on the BIC website. Interested persons can claim a spot on the prayer chart by emailing a preferred time slot to biccomm@messiah.edu.

In addition, congregations and/or other groups are encouraged to commit to praying around the clock for a week through prayer assemblies and other events. The goal is that all 52 weeks of the year will be covered by prayer, and that the BIC Church will experience a continuous flow of intercession, 24/7/365.

A printable form is available to help churches coordinate prayer slots for a week.
