Prayer Strategy
Making the Supernatural Connection
While we can equip one another with some great tools to educate, inspire, and support fellow believers, what we cannot do is change a heart. Knowing the truth is one thing. Walking in the truth is something different. We need God. He’s our provider! He’s the power!
We know that He has commissioned us as His partners in this work of the Gospel, but we’re just His ambassadors – the real work is done by the Holy Spirit. So take a moment to ask God for wisdom as you organize and lead this series.
An Hour of Prayer
-
Schedule a one-hour prayer time two weeks before you begin the series and schedule one for the second week of the series. This allows people to pray in advance of What’s It All About?, and helps build momentum, increases ownership and helps move people into an attitude of expectancy about what God will do in people’s hearts during the series.
-
Ask your congregation for a specific number of people to commit to pray for one hour before the series begins and one hour in the middle of the series.
- Ask church staff to commit to a one-hour prayer time.
- If you decide not to hold a corporate prayer vigil, provide people with suggestions for how they can spend their time praying.
Suggested Format for a Corporate Hour of Prayer
(Adjust the content and allotted time to suit your setting)
Preparation (4 minutes) – Think about God. Make a conscious effort to surrender yourself and make your thoughts obedient to Christ. Thank God for bringing you to this place at this point in time. Be alert to His presence and in tune with His purpose. An hour of prayer is not an accident.
Praise (15 minutes) – Read some praise Psalms aloud. Sing praise songs. Consider including a variety of musical instruments or offering a spiritual dance.
Cleansing (10 minutes) – Invite God to search you. Don’t attempt to hide or rationalize any areas of conviction. Just seek forgiveness. If past sins cloud your thinking, begin to thank God for His grace and mercy.
Thanksgiving (10 minutes) – Count your blessings, aloud. Sing songs of thanksgiving. Read scripture passages of thanksgiving and promise. Testify to answered prayer. Give the Lord a special offering.
Intercession (20 minutes) – Ask boldly and ask specifically. We enter His presence because He invites us to come. Make known your personal needs and desires. Then pray for people who are close to you and within your sphere of influence. Finally, pray for the world. Intercede for individuals, groups, organizations and nations. Be sure and remember What’s It All About?.
Closing (1 minute) – Listen. Allow the Spirit to impress on your heart anything He chooses. Breathe one more prayer of thanks.
