M202r Pastoral Care and Counseling I
The focus of this required course is to learn and practice the fundamental counseling skills necessary for effectively listening, communicating, and being pastorally present with people. As the first of a two part sequence, this course will emphasize the basic skills, principles, and processes of pastoral counseling, along with examining vital issues like helping someone who is in crisis (such as suicidal) or depressed, integrating theology naturally in people-helping encounters, knowing when and how to refer, ethical and legal issues, and avoiding burnout. The second course, Pastoral Care and Counseling II, can be taken after successfully completing the first course and will focus more specifically on applying the principles learned in Pastoral Care and Counseling I to issues like helping people who are experiencing grief, loss, and relational problems, as well as doing good hospital visitations and helping couples prepare for marriage. Professional development will additionally be examined in Pastoral Care and Counseling II.
