Annually the Brethren in Christ are called upon to start the year with a week of prayer and fasting. Any call to prayer is a call first to righteousness requiring a humbled spirit, confession, and seeking God's presence. The promise of answering such a call is that "the prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective" (James 5:16).

In 2006 we want our united prayer to focus on loving boldly, giving generously, and serving joyfully. This focus relates to our Core Value of "Living Simply," as stated here:

"We value uncluttered lives, which free us to
love boldly, give generously, and serve joyfully."

Bible passages that support this focus include:

1 John 3:16-18
2 Corinthians 9:6-8
1 Peter 4:7-10
1 Timothy 6:17-19

Intercessors all over North America join together during the first week of the year to pray and fast for our Church and its ministries. Many churches organize prayer assemblies to unite with other congregations in prayer.

We need God to help us live truly abundant lives by wisely investing in those things that have eternal value. Let's allow Jesus' life and teachings to show us where the lure of temporary things and the distractions of life might be choking our spiritual vitality. And let's be open to making adjustments as the Holy Spirit enlightens our minds and hearts.
