Worship profile: Sandra Musser

Sandra Musser

Sandra Musser began playing the organ in church at the age of 14. “I learned very early on to worship through my fingers,” says Sandra of those early corporate worship experiences. “The hymns and gospel songs of the day moved me toward a spiritual response.”

Even though Sandra now serves the Brethren in Christ community as the chair of the General Conference Board, she still cherishes the opportunity to “join my voice in a corporate setting.” Her spiritual journey has led her to embrace a number of worship styles and expressions. “In my childhood,” she recalls, “I entered a quiet thoughtful sanctuary with lights that were dimmed. Later, I entered a loud, joyous celebration where the lights were bright. Now I am observing . . . quieter, more convicting lyrics with lights [illuminating the worship band] on stage. Every age has seen varying musical expression in worship. I was taught that change is a part of life, and my job is to find my own expression in a changing world.”

Despite this constantly evolving landscape of worship styles, Sandra acknowledges that the ultimate purpose of worship remains the same: “to draw us into unity with God and His purposes through a recognition of who God is and how and why we were created.” This, she says, transcends our musical tastes and preferences.

“My comfort level with regards to worship expression has greatly expanded,” admits Sandra. “The lyrics and the heart are what define worship—not the notes on a page. There is no music to my ears that cannot praise God.”
